Never Fail at Salary Negotiations Again

Never Fail at Salary Negotiations AgainNever Fail at Salary Negotiations Again Youve had three interviews , have a clear picture of what the job entails and taken the office tour. If youre in the gig space, youve spoken with the client, shown your portfolio and agreed on the parameters of the project. Negotiating is the thing I hate the most, says RJ Rousso of Rousso, Bradley & Associates , a Los Angeles PR firm. The client or potential employer always wants you to go first. I used to throw out a number and hope it was in the ballpark. Not anymora. Rousso has learned never to talk money without due diligence. After I talk to the client (or potential employer) I go back to the office and figure out the worth of the project (how many hours, etc.).Or, if its a salary, I go in prepared with as much information as I can get , not only for that company but for the industry at large. I look at the Internet and talk to people in the industry. I come armed by knowing my wor th in the market place, and I always give a higherbei number.Rashida Goryawala, a jewelry designer, was a nave 22-year-old when she took her first job out of college. A Mumbai native, Goryawala joined an e-commerce firm to learn more about the business of her craft. She was promoted quickly, but without a salary bump, just a title and more responsibility . They told me that I should be proud I was promoted. Says Goryawala. She bought it It was a start-up and I assumed they couldnt pay much, so I didnt ask for more. Then she discovered a man who reported to her had a bigger salary . She doesnt necessarily blame gender for the discrepancy. Goryawala takes the blame, admitting it was her beginners error when she didnt ask for more. When she asked, the CEO adjusted her salary, but Goryawala e ventually left when she got an offer of a better fleck and salary . zu sich lesson learned she did not accept the first offer. She knew what the market paid and asked for that amount.Looking back, Goryawala, now 26, says, My biggest mistake was not doing enough research on what these positions should pay. Ive learned to know my worth and make sure a company will value me.Even seasoned applicants can get taken. Kate Brodock, whos worked in the tech start-up world since she graduated from college, has a painful tale. Recruited as chief marketing officer by the founders of a tech company, Brodock lowered her usual rate. They had never done a start-up and I assumed they didnt have the full capacity to pay me my worth yet. I thought I was being kind. Kind, or, as Brodock says, dumb by letting her emotions rule, making for a decision that would negatively affect her working life. During the original negotiation Brodock , whos ironically been working for gender equality for years, agreed to the number they offered and a small amount of equity . She made it clear that she had lowered her price and her employers agreed to talk about compensation again in six months. I did bring it up in six months, and it was brushed aside, says Brodock. I believed them when they said they werent quite ready but would be soon. At the year mark Brodock reintroduced the subject again , with the caveat that if she wasnt doing the job they wanted , that they would talk about fixes. She didnt get an answer. Meanwhile, she learned that the chief data scientist and a programmer, both male, were each getting at least $25,000 more than she was. I should have been making what they were, if not more, says Brodock. When she looks back at the situation, Brodock says she is angry with herself. I should have known better. Brodock wont say it was gender discrimination , but its a high possibility. There was daily evidence of gender bias. But I made it easy for them to begin with. Soon after, she left for a better opportunity at Women 2.0, a platform for women tech founders. Now,Women 2.0 is offering a negotiation seminar later this spring bit.ly/W2CCSalaryHer final word on th e subject? We as women often times dont know how to have these conversations. Theyre not easy, but they can be successful. Go in armed with every bit of information and confidence you can muster.

Reducing Health Insurance Costs for Employees

Reducing Health Insurance Costs for Employees Reducing Health Insurance Costs for Employees Business health insurance is a major cost of doing business, especially for small companies and mom-and-pop firms. With premiums soaring, many small business owners are asking their employees to shoulder more of the financial burden or cutting benefits entirely. The New York-based Commonwealth Fund, an advocacy group for health care reform, says small business health insurance costs average 18 percent more than those of larger businesses. In California, health insurance costs increased by 10 percent in 2006 alone, according to the California Employer Health Benefits Survey. Those costs have proven too high for many small businesses. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, more than 45 million Americans are uninsured, and approximately 60 percent of the uninsured are employed by small businesses. In 2006, the average monthly cost for health insurance for small group plans, which are largely used by small businesses, was $311 per month, according to a survey by Americas Health Insurance Plans, a trade group representing health insurance companies. The average premium for a family of four was $814 per month, the association reported. Small business health insurance may take a huge chunk out of your revenue, but benefits often attract better employees and help retain existing workers. Satisfied, healthy employees are more likely to help your business grow. If youre struggling to provide health insurance, here are some tips that could reduce your small business health insurance costs. Keep Employees Healthy Motorola Inc., for example, has instituted a comprehensive wellness program that includes disease management for afflictions such as asthma and diabetes, as well as offering flu shots, cancer screenings, smoking-cessation sessions and around-the-clock phone line staffed by nurses. The company found that for every dollar it invested, it saved $3.93, according to a 2003 report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report, “Prevention Makes Common Cents.” Likewise, heavy machinery manufacturer Caterpillar estimates that its wellness program will save the company $700 million by 2015. Such wellness programs don’t just keep company accountants happy. They’re also popular with workers. Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. found that 85 percent of its employees in its New York offices participated in at least one wellness program and that 80 percent used on-site facilities such as fitness centers or physical therapy, according to the HHS report.   Reduce Coverage Cutting coverage or asking your employees to contribute more to the plan is a logical step to reducing small business health insurance costs. The downside of this strategy is that it will likely prove unpopular with workers. Its fairly common for businesses to exclude dental and vision insurance but talk to your employees to see what they want covered. They might opt for having dental and vision insurance and a health savings account, for example.   Consider Health Savings Accounts Health savings accounts are an increasingly popular option for owners of small businesses. These tax-exempt accounts, which are used to pay for certain medical expenses, could reduce your small business health insurance costs while giving your employees tax breaks. You must have a high-deductible health insurance plan to establish a health savings account. For example, in 2007 the minimum deduction for individuals is $1,100; for families, it is $2,200. That means that you or your employees would have to pay $1,100 out of your own pockets for health care expenses such as doctors visits or prescriptions before you are reimbursed by the insurance company. But there are benefits: In 2007, employers, workers, and their families can contribute tax-free up to $2,850 for individual health savings accounts or $5,650 for family accounts. These funds can only be used to cover health care costs, and employees can take their accounts with them if they leave. The funds generally do not expire. Contributions and withdrawals are both tax-free, and individuals can claim tax deductions on their 1040 forms â€" meaning employees dont need to itemize to get the tax break. Employer contributions are also tax-deductible for business owners but are not required. Individuals can also set up health savings accounts. To establish or participate in a health savings account, your only comprehensive health insurance can be the high-deductible health insurance plan and they must be offered to all employees. Health savings accounts benefit healthy employees who do not regularly see doctors. You or your employees can, however, have health insurance that specifically covers ailments, including certain diseases or illnesses, accidents, dental, and vision care. Join a Group Small group health insurance plans cover between two and 50 employees, although there are group of one insurance plans for the self-employed that offer similar benefits. The larger your group, the lower your premiums will be. According to the Americas Health Insurance Plans 2006 survey, 80 percent of small groups polled had 10 or fewer employees in their health insurance plans, and the average monthly premiums for individuals was $330. Firms with between 26 and 50 employees paid $287 a month for single premiums. If your business has fewer than 10 employees, you can still partner with other businesses or individuals and expand your group plan. Note that health care laws are governed by the states, so youll want to partner with people in your state. Shop Around Health insurance is a huge business, so shopping around for different providers could reduce your small business health insurance costs. Start by searching the Internet and also ask other owners of small businesses what they pay for health insurance. Insurance agents will charge fees, but youll save time and they can investigate health insurance plans for you. The National Federation of Independent Businesses partnered with eHealthInsurance, a national health insurance agency that gives you several quotes online.

Here is how top leaders project charisma

Here is how top leaders project charisma Here is how top leaders project charisma Let’s face it, in business dealings, charisma counts. A lot. And charisma is as much about body language and impression management as it is about issues and substance. I’ve seen many qualified people get passed over for promotion (or lose a sale or fail an interview) simply because they couldn’t project a sense of professional presence.Max Weber, the father of sociology, first coined the term “charisma” to describe inspirational leaders. Originally from the Greek kharisma, meaning favor or divine gift, charisma has also been defined as “part confidence, part presence, and part sex appeal.” But however we define it, we know it when we see it. We call someone charismatic when they somehow compel us to embrace their vision - whether it’s corporate, social, or political.Nowhere is this more evident than in how people perceive you as a leader. So when I coach senior managers, I further define charisma as knowing how to present your best authentic self.Whether you are inte rviewing for a job, pitching your idea to a venture capitalist, addressing an audience of employees, or presenting a new business strategy to the board of directors, you are the most charismatic when what you are feeling internally is perfectly aligned with what you’re verbally expressing. (At which point your body language automatically becomes congruent with your words.) That’s why leaders who don’t buy into an organizational change should never try to promote it, and why leaders who are speaking candidly about their deepest values are so amazingly convincing.People also tend to follow charismatic leaders because they are perceived as confident and upbeat. And here you can see the power of the body/mind connection in action. You already know that the way you feel affects your body language. (If you are depressed, you tend to round your shoulders, slump, and look down. If you are upbeat you tend to smile and hold yourself erect). But did you know that the reverse is also true ? The way you hold and carry yourself, your gestures, your movements and even your facial expressions affect your emotions by sending messages back to your brain. For example: It has been demonstrated that a smile is not only a consequence of feeling happy or content, but also that putting on a smile can induce physiological changes in body temperature, heart rate, and skin resistance. Smiling can actually make you feel happier. And several studies show that standing with good posture and legs planted firmly on the floor (about hip distance apart) can make you look and feel more confident. The most charismatic leaders mix these signals of confidence and authority with a wide range of warmth and likeability cues. They display genuine smiles, maintain positive eye contact, use open-palm gestures when speaking, orient their bodies toward those with whom they are engaging, touch others during conversations, etc. And anyone can be coached to include more of these positive signals (and to r educe unproductive or negative signals) in their interactions. But here’s something else I discovered about charisma. Sometimes all you have to do to be truly impressive is to get out of your own way.I once worked with the head of a research department who was preparing for a major business presentation. One-on-one, this man was charming, smart, and had a great sense of humor. In informal settings, his body language was congruent and expressive. But he was also an introvert. Put him on stage in front of an audience and he became a communications disaster. You may be in a similar situation. When talking with friends, you speak coherently and convincingly, you use your hands to help describe an event or object, you smile, frown, shrug your shoulders and make broad, smooth gestures that add meaning to your messages. Yet during important business presentations, you become anxious or self-conscious. And, as a result, your usually eloquent speech and body language suffer. If so, you may not need to work on your technique. Rather, like my client, you might be better off learning to relax and to focus more on the importance of your message and the impact you want it to have on your audience, in order to let your natural enthusiasm and convincing body language “speak up.”The next time you want to project your most charismatic self, follow these simple, but powerful suggestions: Begin by focusing on your genuine emotional connection to your message so that your verbal and nonverbal messages begin to organically align. Then stand up straight, pull your shoulders back and hold your head high. (Just by assuming this physical position, you will start to feel surer of yourself.) Keep your body language warm and engaging. And, remember, when you add a smile you not only engage others, you positively influence your own attitude.Charismatic leaders are rarely born that way. Any leader can be perceived as more charismatic if he or she practices and improves th ese few basic skills. But don’t take my word for it. Try it and see for yourself.

The Pattern People Follow to Find Great Jobs

The Pattern People Follow to Find Great Jobs The Pattern People Follow to Find Great Jobs I recently gave a talk to a small class of coders in Phoenix on the subject of finding a great job. In this post, Ill share the content of  the talk. But first, a bit of a backstory on why I was asked to  speak on this particular subject. Almost 10 years ago, I grabbed a couple of friends and an R.V. and hit the road to interview 300+ people about their career paths. I was just graduating from college and was curious about a stat I had read: More than half of the American workforce dislikes what they do for a living. My question was, What were those  people who loved their jobs doing that the rest of us werent? I lined up interviews with everyone from Michael Jordans shoe designer to the CEO of MGM Grand and a goat farmer. I asked them about how they got to where they are today. I documented their stories on a website, wrote a book, and have since delivered more than 100 speeches from Alaska to Miami Beach about the findings. After getting off the road, I started a digital marketing company about five years ago and have been part of the minority that enjoys what I do for a living. And yet, as I prepared to give my talk to this particular class of coders, I veered away from the stump speech and revisited what I had listened to 10 years ago. Heres what I had to say to the class: Advice for Landing a Great Job / Starting a Business / Running a Marketing Campaign Theres a pattern Ive identified. The pattern, or formula, applies to finding a great job, starting a business, or running a successful marketing campaign. There are three elements to this pattern: story, skill, and network. Every person Ive met who has a great job or started their own business has these three things, and every successful marketing campaign Ive ever been involved with has had them as well. Story Lets start with story. Story is the reason why you get hired, why you start a business, or why you buy a product or service from a marketing campaign. People are so compelled by stories that they want to do business with you or hire you. Story is  the differentiator and captures your drive. Of course, some stories are more interesting than others â€" which is why you need to consciously and continuously create the story for yourself. The best exercise you can try  is to write your bio as it is now, and then write your future bio. Lets take me for an example. My current bio: Brett Farmiloe is the founder and managing partner of Markitors, a digital marketing company that moves small businesses forward online. He is the author of the book  Pursue the Passion  and has delivered more than 100 speeches from coast to coast on finding purpose in work.   This bio is fine â€" if Im satisfied with a bio in the past tense. At the  beginning of this year, however, I decided to write my fake bio. It included items that I wanted to be part of my story. Heres the fake bio: Brett Farmiloe is a cereal entrepreneur, backyard farmer, author, mutual fund manager, World Pillow Fight Championship revivalist, and founder of a digital marketing company that moves small businesses forward online. Hes the father of two, and has owned an R.V. three different times. (Note: A brief explanation of the fake bio is listed at the end  of this post.) Moral of the fake bio: If you write it down, take it seriously, and move things forward, you will write the story that youve always wanted for yourself. Action Item:  Write a fake bio for yourself based on  how you want your life to look and the story you want to be told about yourself. Instead of  becoming  paralyzed by contemplating what your purpose or passion is, writing a bio gives you a compelling direction to pursue. Skill Next part of the pattern is skill. Skill is what an employer or client gets when they hire you and/or what a customer gets when they buy a product/service from you. As someone wise once said, You gotta have skills to pay the bills. Not only did the people I interviewed on my cross-country tours have great stories that fueled them in their journeys, but they also had amazing talents that they used to reach the pinnacles of their professions. Michael Jordans shoe designer got kicked out of his art class as a freshman in high school because he drew better than the teacher did. A Hall of Fame basketball coach was an educator for decades both on and off the court. A celebrity chef plopped herself in the kitchen of one of the finest restaurants in France and spent years learning about the distinctions that make the difference. As one person on the tour told us, The average overnight success story takes 17 years to create. It may not take 17 years to acquire the skills you need to succeed, but the point is that it takes awhile. Choose the skills that you need to make your story a success. Action Item: Interview the people who are actually living the story you want for yourself. Find out what skills were  absolutely vital to their success. Then, figure out a way to acquire those skills. Network The final element of this formula is network. Network is, to put it simply, how you make it all happen. With a marketing plan, you identify where and how you can market your product or service. Since you are your own product or service,  you have to figure out how youll market your story and skills to find a great job or start a business. Most people we interviewed on the tour had a little help from their network along the way to get to where they are. Most people you probably know got to where they are through a referral or two from friends, family, and colleagues. The key is developing those referral sources to increase the likelihood that your network will help you achieve your story. Everyone is accessible. Seriously. Everyone. I never thought Id be sitting in the corner office of the CEO of MGM Grand, or sharing tea with a Nobel Prize winner, or listening to a jam fest with one of the best banjo players in bluegrass â€" but it all happened. Action Item:  If you want to  grow your network, develop a targeted list of people you want to connect with. Find a way to connect with them, and  then nurture those relationships. Thats the magic. Story. Skill. Network. Focus on those three things, and youll find a great job, start a successful business, or execute a great marketing plan. Extra: Brief Explanation of  the Fake Bio Listed Above - Cereal entrepreneur is not a typo. A friend and I always wanted to launch our own brand of cereal. Since writing the fake bio and discreetly publishing it online, weve put a prototype together. - Backyard farmer: Since writing this bio, Ive built a chicken coop, acquired eight chickens, and built two large gardens. I felt like I had to live up to my ancestral last name, Farmiloe. We just got our first eggs this week. - Mutual fund manager: Ive frequently heard about how purpose-driven companies outperform the SP 500. I decided to analyze the top 10,000 most popular companies on Glassdoor and group the 50 highest-rated publicly traded companies into a mutual fund. Now Im able to test the truth of this statement for myself. - World Pillow Fight Championship revivalist: This was one of my favorite 4th of July events growing up. The event stopped about 10 years ago after a solid 40-year run. I decided this event needs to come back, and Im currently in the process of reviving it for 2017. - The father of two and three-time R.V. owner parts are true. Including both items in the bio just completes the story of who I am and what my priorities are. Brett Farmiloe  is the founder of Markitors.

After Fukushima Task Force Challenges Nuclear Industry

After Fukushima Task Force Challenges Nuclear Industry After Fukushima Task Force Challenges Nuclear Industry After Fukushima, ASME Task Force Challenges Nuclear Industry In the wake of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that devastated coastal regions of northern Japan and the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, an ASME task force of nuclear experts is calling for a new nuclear safety construct to go beyond current safety planning to prevent extensive societal disruption caused by radioactive releases from accidents. Developing appropriate safety procedures and guidelines will be critical for the publics acceptance of nuclear energy as a baseload power source, say task force leaders. We cant have the consequences of Fukushima happen again, says Regis A. Matzie, vice chairman of the task force and a former Westinghouse Electric Co. nuclear executive. Were calling for significantly expanding what [the industry] has to protect againsta significant sociopolitical and economic impact on society. After the accident in northern Japan, the surrounding area suffered radiological contamination that resulted in the relocation of more than 100,000 people. Economic losses cascaded through the Japanese and global economies as Japan shut down all of its nuclear generating stations. Around the world, governments began to reconsider nuclear energys future, with Germany also planning to shut down its reactors. Review Those developments prompted the formation of the ASME Presidential Task Force on Response to Japan Nuclear Power Plant Events, which reviewed the Fukushima events and contrasted it with previous nuclear accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. Fukushimas units are the first nuclear reactors to experience core degradation due to a catastrophic external event, and the first light water reactors to experience accidents resulting in large radioactivity releases to the environment, states the task forces report. Furthermore, the accident at Fukushima was the first multi-unit accident in power reactor history, complicating response and recovery, it states. Dr. Nils Diaz chaired the ASME task force. TMIs containment structure prevented significant release of radioactivity although the reactor core suffered a partial meltdown. Chernobyl involved a reactivity excursion in a graphite-moderated, water-cooled reactor, resulted in a steam explosion, burning of the hot graphite in the core, and, absent a containment structure, release of the radioactive contents of the uranium fuel to the environment, according to the report. The common item linking the three is maintenance of core cooling, before or during the accident. It is Nuclear Engineering 101: Cool the core, says Nils Diaz, task force chairman and former chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. At Fukushima, There wasnt appropriate attention paid to accident planning. Call for Change The task forces call for a new safety construct is defined as a set of planned, coordinated, and implemented systems ensuring that nuclear plants are designed, constructed, operated, and managed to prevent extensive societal disruption caused by radioactive releases from accidents, using an all-risk approach. The term all-risk requires consideration of all credible hazards in developing probabilistic risk assessments, including rare but credible events that threaten the safety of a nuclear generating station. That includes very low-probability events, such as extreme floods and other natural phenomena that are unprecedented but conceivable at a given site, says the task force. Essential elements of the task forces safety construct include: Capability to address potential events beyond the design basis and possible cliff-edge effects; Confirmation that the design basis or extended design basis includes rare yet credible events; Use of an all-risk approach; ensuring core cooling for all phases of accident progression; Improved human performance, organizational infrastructure, command and control, accident management, and emergency preparedness. Such an approach greatly expands the industrys design basis of protecting public health and safety. The fact is weve always fixated on public health and safety, says Diaz. The present body of knowledge establishes the importance of maintaining that focus yet highlights a relevant fact: Major consequences of severe accidents at nuclear plants have been socio-political and economic disruptions of enormous cost to society. Perception But perception is reality and the task force acknowledges the industry must be proactive not only in expanding the scope of safety planning but in communicating that to the public. Although Fukushima did not expose any fatal flaws in nuclear-generating technology, it did expose the need to extend the design basis to include rare yet credible events, including tsunamis and other natural events. To the public, the difference does not always matter. The primary nuclear power safety goal is and will continue to be protection of public health and safety, states the report. However, the Fukushima Dai-ichi accident reveals the need for additional steps to further reduce the potential for socio-political and economic consequences resulting from radioactivity releases from accidents. Diaz and Matzie emphasize that more rigorous studies will have to be site-specific and have buy-in from government. Noting the global nature of the industry, the report also calls for accountability from beyond regulatory agencies to plant designers, manufacturers, owners, and operators. This has to be part of a movement, a way of institutionalizing [change], says Diaz. Certainly no nation wants to accept [an edict] from another country. The task force is not calling for the new safety construct to be imposed as a regulatory mandate. Rather, Diaz and Matzie say it should be the natural outcome of in-depth analysis of existing and additional design and management capabilities. Were giving a vision and a goal, says Matzie. With the release of this report, we hope to get people to interact over the big-picture findings. Were also recommending ASME as a society to help convene a broad base of stakeholders to advance the recommendations. Read the task forces report. We can't have the consequences of Fukushima happen again. We're calling for significantly expanding what [industry] has to protect against- a significant sociopolitical and economic impact on society.Regis A. Matzie, vice chairman, ASME Presidential Task Force on Response to Japan Nuclear Power Plant Events

Jobs report shows professional jobs growing steadily

Jobs report shows professional jobs growing steadily Jobs report shows professional jobs growing steadily The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the April 2017 jobs report last week, showing some surprising good news: Despite reports of layoffs at many major companies, employment in business and professional services continued to rise last month, and  it’s been rising for the past year. It’s important to note that there is a large margin of error, and that one of the surveys goes through revisions after initial data for the month is released. The big question: What’s the unemployment rate?According to the April 2017 jobs report,  â€œboth the unemployment rate, at 4.4 percent, and the number of unemployed persons, at 7.1 million, changed little in April. Over the year, the unemployment rate has declined by 0.6 percentage point, and the number of unemployed has fallen by 854,000.”Mark Hamrick, Bankrate.com‘s senior economic analyst,  put this in perspective for Ladders.Referring to that 4.4% level, he said, “theoretically, the lower the unemployment rate goes, the more challengi ng it becomes to keep growth going.” Hamrick added, “The recovery began eight years ago  - we’re now in the third-longest recovery period since the end of World War II. We’re definitely at the low end of the unemployment rate spectrum.”The New York Times  also reported that the 4.4% rate was “down from 4.5 percent in March and the lowest rate in more than 10 years,” according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The professional and business services “supersector” gets a boostIf this sounds like a pretty broad category to you, you’re right.  That’s because it’s made up of three whole sectors, namely:  â€œProfessional, Scientific, and Technical Services,” “Management of Companies and Enterprises,” and “Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services.”The number of people getting jobs in professional and business services went up by 39,000 jobs last month, and 612,000 jobs in the last year.Hamrick told  Ladders about what’s go ing on in this area.“We need business and professional services to do a lot of the heavy lifting of job creation because many people have those skill sets,” he said, adding, “The US economy is largely reliant on services and that’s why we’ve seen people moving away from the traditional Rust Belt,” referring to various manufacturing jobs.More gains across the boardSome industries hired more job seekers than others. “Nonfarm payroll” jobs, or non-agricultural jobs,  went up  by a whopping  211,000 last month. In April, “leisure and hospitality” went up by 55,000 jobs, “health care and social assistance” by 37,000, “financial activities” by 19,000 jobs, and “mining” by 9,000 jobs.“There was a good cross-section of sectors hiring in the April jobs report, business and professional services as well as health care among them. The goods-producing sector continues to be a work in progress. Construction, manufacturing and mining/logging all were in the plus c olumn, which is good to see,” Hamrick said in an emailed statement. What didn’t change much last monthOther than the unemployment rate (4.4%)  and “number of unemployed persons” (7.1 million), here are just some of the areas where no drastic changes happened in April 2017.According to the report, “employment in other major industries, including construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, information, and government, showed little change over the month.”Unlike the “unemployment rate for adult men,” which dipped  to 4% in April, the  â€œjobless rates” for certain groups didn’t change much:  â€œadult women” had a 4.1% rate, “Blacks” had a 7.9% rate, “Hispanics” had a 5.2% rate, “Whites” had a 3.8% rate, “Asians” had a 3.2% rate, and teens had a 14.7% rate.As for the number of people who were out of work for at least 27 weeks (called the “long-term unemployed”) the report said that the amount was â €œessentially unchanged at 1.6 million in April” and accounted for 22.6% of the unemployed. Over the year, the number of long-term unemployed was down by 433,000.

Why Didnt I Get The Job

Why Didn't I Get The Job Why Didn't I Get The Job Ten popular reasons that prevent job applicants from receiving offers. While there are hundreds of reasons why job interviews don’t go as well as they could, some are more common than others. Though, contrary to popular belief, not all outcomes are the interviewer’s fault, nor are the outcomes always in the interviewer’s control. Here are ten popular reasons that prevent job applicants from receiving offers:1. The interviewee has not done his or her research on the companyWhen the interviewee has not done his or her research on the company they are interviewing with, there is virtually no chance they will get the offer. Despite how much the company likes them as a person or how fitting their past experience is, showing a lack of knowledge regarding the company you’re interviewing with results in instant rejection.2. There is a disconnect in personalities between the interviewer and intervieweeIt’s not uncommon for the personalities of the interviewer and interviewee to clash . While the most successful people learn how to get along with others, sometimes it simply doesn’t work out.3. The interviewee does not answer the questions appropriately Every now and then, an interviewer will go into the meeting with a preconceived notion of what the interviewee should say. As someone going for a job, it is difficult to successfully conduct an interview with an individual who wants a certain answer. However, it does happen.4. There are more qualified applicants for the positionIf a company has rigid background requirements for a particular job, the recruiting party will heavily analyze the applicants’ backgrounds and closely compare them. While factors such as likability matter to employers, applicant qualifications are typically higher priority.5. The job applicant is asking for too much moneyWhether it’s not in a company’s budget or another qualified candidate is asking for less money, there are times when perfectly qualified candidates get turned away for asking for too much.6. The interviewee’s past raises questions about his or her ability to stay at one job The most desired employees are the ones who have demonstrated longevity with previous employers and can execute necessary tasks while remaining autonomous. When a job seeker has jumped from position to position, employers have good reason to be skeptical about their loyalty.7. The company decides to postpone hiringFor a myriad of reasons outside of the interviewee’s control, companies may postpone hiring for a previously listed position.8. The applicant does not show interest in the position I always tell job applicants to appear upbeat and enthusiastic about the job. When a hiring manager feels that a job seeker is indifferent as to whether they get the position, the majority of the time, that interviewee will not see an offer, or a second interview.9. The proposed salary does not meet the candidate’s requirementsHiring companies can make the mistake of offering a co mpensation package that falls extremely short of the candidate’s expectations, which can cause candidates to immediately walk away.10. The hiring company has rigid requirementsEvery now and again, hiring managers will have artificially inflated expectations for the role they are trying to fill, which will prevent them from seeing the positive aspects of any job applicant who is not perfect on paper. There are so many reasons why interviewees don’t receive a job offer. I always tell job seekers that they can only control their actions and have to leave the rest up to chance.

5 Metrics to Help You Track the ROI of Your Employer Brand

5 Metrics to Help You Track the ROI of Your Employer Brand 5 Metrics to Help You Track the ROI of Your Employer Brand The Hudson RPO study found that 66 percent of responding HR managers anticipated an increase in the importance of employer brand, but only 16 percent measured their employer brand in the first place. While you aren’t expected to play the role of a full-time data scientist, there’s no denying that the role of HR has expanded to include supervising and quantifying a companys employer brand. Tracking and measuring this data helps you gain a more complex understanding of your company’s employer brand in the marketplace and also allows you to understand the ROI of your time investment. Tracking this information manually is more difficult than connecting with social listening and intelligence tools available on the market. But for many HR managers, it’s the most cost-effective way to stay on top of their employer brand without making it a second full-time job. As you begin to monitor your employer brand, here are several metrics you can track to show your progress. Employee retention rate While many factors contribute to a company’s retention rate, such as location, the local candidate pool and company growth, your overall retention rate provides a reliable temperature gauge of your employer brand. If employees enjoy working at your company, they will stay. Depending on the size of your company, track this number monthly or quarterly to see if your performance is improving or stagnating. The more you work on the pillars of your employer brand, such as attracting the right candidates and living out the company’s belief system, the higher your retention rate should climb. Cost-per-hire Similar logic works for the cost-per-hire metric and employee retention rate. Many external factors affect this metric, but it’s a helpful source of information about how your recruitment efforts are changing over time. The more accurate your company’s hiring pages and the better your word-of-mouth reputation become, the lower this metric should sink. Employee referrals The number of employee referrals you receive is also a good indication of your employer brand. How many referrals do you receive per month and per year? Are your employees recommending their friends and families to the company, or do you receive 100 percent of your incoming applicants from job search engines? If none of your employees are referring their network to your openings, it may indicate that they are not recommending the workplace. The more authentic your workplace becomes, and the more you hire employees who match it, the more referrals you should see coming from those employees. Simply Hired’s Employer Brand Index Perhaps it goes without saying, but Simply Hired’s Employer Brand Index is an excellent metric in two different ways. First, it allows you to see how other brands perform over time in the top 25 Trending Now scores. You can also track your own progress on the index to see how your employer brand is translating into more clicks and views for your company’s open positions. Mentions per month, quarter and year Of course you should also monitor the fine line between employer brand and employer PR by monitoring mentions of your company each month, quarter and year. Set up a Google Alert for press mentions, employee reviews and other mentions for your brand and collect them over time. Track how many mentions you receive each month, quarter and year to catch identifiable trends as they develop. Social media “scores” If your organization generates a good deal of content, use its social media “score” to track general reach and progress. For example, logging into a Klout account will give you access to a Klout score that may adjust each month according to your efforts. Keep in mind, however, that this score is not directly tied to your employer brand. It’s a better measure of your brand’s authority within its industry. Still, this is a good metric to keep in mind in terms of market saturation and awareness, which do filter into your employer brand. Ongoing surveys Finally, don’t overlook the power of ongoing internal surveys. If you can take the time to set up a short, free survey for your employees, you will gain access to a world of insights. You can also send these surveys out automatically to gain insight into your employees’ changing views and perceptions about your brand. Track these metrics over time to see how the changes you implement and the work you do affects your employees’ perceptions and sentiments. As you consider which metrics will reveal the most accurate depiction of your employer brand, it’s important to understand that the value of some employer brand metrics will vary according to your situation. For example, enterprise organizations have different needs, expectations and amounts of data. Local and national organizations may also experience a different variety or depth of data. Every company should be able to determine a selection of effective metrics, or Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), that can help them understand and manipulate their employer brand.
